The prescription pathway
Three steps between pain and a plan that works.
We believe patients deserve to understand exactly how strong painkillers are prescribed, checked and reviewed in the UK — so we publish the whole pathway.
- 01
Your prescriber decides
Strong painkillers such as morphine, oxycodone or fentanyl are started and reviewed by a doctor, nurse prescriber or specialist team — never self-selected.
- 02
We dispense and check
We validate the prescription, screen it against everything else you take, and explain how to take it, what to expect and what to avoid.
- 03
Review and adjust
Opioids are reviewed regularly: is the pain better, are the side effects tolerable, and can the dose come down? That conversation is part of the treatment.
Medicines information
Clear information on the medicines used for pain.
Uses, legal status, safety warnings and side effects for the strong and moderate painkillers seen most often in UK practice — written for patients, not for pharmacy shelves.
Strong opioid
Morphine
Morphine is a strong opioid painkiller used for severe pain that cannot be controlled with weaker medicines. In the UK it is most often used in cancer pain, palliative care and pain after major surgery or serious injury.
Strong opioid
Oxycodone
Oxycodone is a strong opioid used for moderate to severe pain. It is roughly one and a half to two times as potent as oral morphine, so it is used where morphine is not suitable or not effective enough.
Moderate opioid
Tramadol
Tramadol is a prescription-only painkiller used for moderate to severe pain. It works partly like an opioid and partly like an antidepressant, which explains both its benefits and its particular risks.
Weak opioid
Codeine
Codeine is a weaker opioid used for mild to moderate pain and for cough. On its own it is prescription-only; low-dose tablets combined with paracetamol or ibuprofen can be bought from a pharmacy after a pharmacist's assessment.
These pages are information only. They are not a shop, they do not offer a diagnosis, and they do not replace the advice of your own prescriber.
Patient safety · read before you search
We do not sell prescription-only medicines online. No legitimate UK pharmacy can.
Morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydromorphone, tramadol and buprenorphine are controlled drugs in the UK. They are supplied only against a valid prescription from a UK prescriber, and only after a clinical check. Websites offering them without a prescription are operating unlawfully — and the medicines they ship have killed people.
